OTHER INFORMATION

With the widest range of Great Barrier Reef experiences, The Operator offers a choice of award-winning day trips to the magnificent Outer Barrier Reef and the idyllic Low Isles.

The Operator was founded in 1979 with one vessel, a catamaran, which took guests to the Low Isles. This was the first ever commercial trip to these idyllic coral cays, and visitors coming to the small fishing village of Port Douglas, just north of nearby Cairns, were quick to embrace the concept. Just a few years later in 1983, The Operator pioneered Australia’s first true Outer Barrier Reef cruise, travelling right to the ribbon reefs at the outer edge of the Continental Shelf - one of the very best locations to experience the full majesty and elemental force of this unique natural wonder.

Today, The Operator has become a highly sophisticated company with a fleet of the most advanced Australian made cruising vessels. The Operator hasbeen honoured many times with awards and voted Australia’s best tour operator, but The Operator can only take half the credit. Nature provides the reef and we're proud to take you to where the very best of nature's work is found.

The Operator is committed to sustainable environmental practices and ongoing conservation for future generations to enjoy. Our Reef Biosearch environmental division is led by the largest team of marine biologists outside of a government agency! In fact, Reef Biosearch has the longest logbook database of marine observations on the Great Barrier Reef, ongoing for over two decades. All of our tours are accredited with Advanced Ecotourism Certification and each day, our team of marine biologists are also on hand to ensure our guests gain an appreciation of our World Heritage environment.

It is sure you will enjoy your day with The Operator, experiencing nature's finest with Australia's best.

Certified Diving:
For those divers who already hold a certificate, diving is available on Silversonic. Professional underwater dive guides accompany all dives at no extra charge, ensuring maximum safety and enjoyment.

***All diving is subject to a medical questionnaire.

5 hours of actual reef time diving the Great Barrier Reef, and 3 different sites:

  • Experience and compare three different reef environments all in the one day.
  • Enjoy a wider variety of marine life as different sites are home to different marine life.

Silversonic travels to the most northern outer edge dive destination reached by a day operator. If this is your only trip to the reef you will be enjoying three different environments in the one day enabling three unique types of dives. Great value for money.

With the unique roaming permit that Silversonic retains, it allows the Skipper to moor the vessel at the 3 best sites for the conditions, water clarity and marine life available to the passengers on their day of travel.

  • Up to 3 dives can be enjoyed.
  • Outer Reef sites visited at Agincourt Reef System
  • Wetsuits are available for hire - adult & child sizes
  • All snorkelling, swimming and diving is from the vessel.
  • Access to the water is from a large submerged platform at the rear of the boat.

During the 1 and a half hour journey to Agincourt reef, a marine presentation is provided on the video system in the main cabin and dive briefing and lectures prepare divers for their day on the reef. Prior to snorkelling a safety & interpretative talk by crew prepare snorkellers for a safe and enjoyable experience.

It is a wonderful, exciting and indeed memorable experience to dive the Great Barrier Reef. On a diving holiday you'll swap dive stories with others, you will encounter mostly smooth seas, you will dive beautiful reefs, deep drop offs, see gorgeous marine life, explore tunnels and caves, and bask in the sun between dives on the deck of a boat or sun drenched beach.

Scuba diving has always been a big attraction along the Great Barrier Reef but in recent years it has become simply enormous. It is some of the most spectacular in the world with rich marine life, stunning coral formations, comfortable year round water temperatures and amazing visibility. Whether you are a beginner or expert diver Australia's Great Barrier Reef should be at the top of your list.

The main consideration with scuba diving is that it requires knowledge and care. You can sling a mask on and be a snorkeller in minutes - add an air tank on your back and diving becomes a whole new experience.

Although learning to dive requires some application, it is not difficult to learn and it does not require any sort of superhero strength or fitness. In fact one thing you quickly learn is that doing things with the minimum expenditure of energy is what diving is all about. Your diving time is determined by your tank of air and the more gently you do things the longer that air is going to last.

With numerous reef locations available, each site offers a new experience, selected for its unique variety of marine life and corals. In between water activities, relax on the expansive sundecks overlooking the Coral Sea.

Your crew will ensure you have all you need to make the most of your day on board, which includes full bar facilities, a hot and cold tropical buffet lunch, fresh water showers, morning and afternoon tea.

Conditions:

Certain medical conditions and medications may preclude some people from diving. For advice contact our Silver Series office. Minimum age for diving is 12 years.

A wait of 12 hours is recommended but preferably 24 hours, if doing multiple dives, before ascending to an altitude of 300 metres or greater. On very rare occasions, services can be subject to the effect of weather or unforeseen circumstances requiring changes to the brochured itinerary. Should Silverswift or Silversonic not operate for any reason passengers will be offered an alternative day or a refund authorised. Silver Series does not exercise a cancellation policy.

Snorkelling can be a strenuous activity. Please use caution and inform our crew of any medical conditions.

The number of passengers allowed is indicated next to each vessel on this website. It is your responsibility to choose a journey that is within your capabilities. A boat or trip supplier can refuse to hire a vessel to any person who is in their opinion unfit to skipper or does not meet eligibility requirements. In such circumstances we will have no further liability to you.
